​The Institute of Critical Care Medicine was established on April 20, 1992 as an international center for disasters and critical situations. Since March 26, 1996, it has been functioning as the Institute of Critical Medicine. The institute was accredited on February 7, 2005 and functioned as a higher educational institution until 2009. The main activities of the institute are: training of medical personnel, scientific research, medical practice and journal publication. The Association of Disaster and Critical Care Medicine operates on the basis of the Institute, which is a member of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (WFSICCM) and a constituent part of the European Society of Critical Care Medicine (ESICM). The institute is the main basic unit of the medical services that exist in Georgia. The following services operate in the institute: critical medicine, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, internal medicine, neurology, cardiology, hemodialysis, rehabilitation medicine, diagnostics and others. The institute is equipped with internationally recognized diagnostic and treatment facilities, most of which are manufactured in Georgia. The institute uses the latest nanotechnology diagnostic and treatment equipment. The institute actively cooperates with American and Japanese institutes of critical medicine through participation in scientific research. Every year, the institute holds an international symposium called "Tbilisi International Symposium". , from Poland, etc. In addition, the institute publishes the scientific journal "Critical Situation and Disaster Medicine"; the editorial board of the journal consists of famous scientists from different countries. Nowadays, the university is ready to engage in similar activities with other countries and cooperate with them in this regard.
